Alternatives to Violence Project
Every year that funding is available, Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP) workshops are presented in Nicaragua. AVP was organized by dedicated Quaker volunteers to help workshop attendees develop creative and effective ways to resolve conflicts without violence. Kit and Evelyn Pilgrim have funded and presented AVP workshops with ProNica for several years. Nicaraguan participants are always eager for more.
Spanish and English workshops are well attended in the San Pablo, Matagalpa, Managua, Esteli and San Marcos. Participants report rewards in their personal and work lives. One young woman used her new skills to thwart her brother’s harassment to relinquish her week’s pay for his use. She just walked away instead of allowing physical harm.
AVP workshops are supported by donations. Plans to train Nicaraguan workshop leaders await funds. Local AVP leaders mean more workshops to reach more people. With these essential new skills they can reduce violence in their lives and communities.
